Schrattenthal
No matter where you look, picturesque vineyards that go on for miles – that’s the Weinviertel. In the middle of this picturesque place and not far from the Czech border, lies Schrattenthal, the smallest wine town in Austria. And there you can find the Zull family’s winery, which is not really big at 17 hectares, but it produces great quality wines. And that is partly due to the special microclimate of the area: heat and sun help the grapes to ripen optimally, the nearby Manhartsberg protects the area from cold winds that could damage the vines . The deeply rooted roots of the vines bring out the best in the soil.

The Zulls’ way of working contributes to the unmistakably elegant and complex wines. Instead of grand gestures and exaggerated use of technology, the focus is on tact, perseverance and patience with the courage to experiment. The son Phillip continues what the father Werner has always pursued as a vision: wines with character and brilliance, but great potential to age properly – and even the grandparents still help around. This is how knowledge of wine is passed on from generation to generation and yet is constantly being critically questioned . Because a revolution in viticulture is taking place right here steadily, and quietly.
